Abraham Abadie, Principal, AMS Acquisitions

Abraham Abadie began his real estate career at commercial investment firm Besen and Associates. From there, he moved to Peter Ashe Real Estate, and subsequently Crown Acquisitions, one of New York City’s premier firms. After gaining valuable experience and developing vital connections at Crown, Abadie formed AMS Group with his colleague Michael Mitnick.

AMS Acquisitions LLC (AMS) is a real estate investment firm that focuses on the acquisition and development of retail, residential, and office properties in the New York Metropolitan area.

Since forming in 2012, AMS has built a portfolio of properties throughout New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. AMS operates over 800,000 square feet of office property, manages a myriad of retail and residential properties, and has built a ground-up development portfolio consisting of $600 million in total capitalization, including prime development projects in the most sought-after neighborhoods of New York City.

AMS’ expertise in multiple asset classes gives it the ability to understand and unlock value on both ends of mixed-use projects and provides a major competitive edge in the market. How long have you been in the business?

Since 2007. I’ve worked in real estate since I was 19 and started my own company with my partner Michael Mitnick in 2012. We were 23 at the time and wanted to position ourselves to buy real estate. It took us a little over a year to close our first deal. We both emptied our bank accounts and said, “We either go big or go home.” And thank God we didn’t have to go home.

What made you decide to get into real estate?

I interned at Besen and Associates before I started college and there I saw my first broker setup for a deal and thought to myself, “Wow I’m going to buy a building one day.”

Who inspires you?

My parents. They have always led by example and continue to do so. One example they set is that no matter what challenge comes our way, we need to see the positive and persevere. Another is to conduct our lives in an honest and modest way, and that’s how we conduct our company and business.

What pushes you to the next level?

Knowing there’s more real estate out there to buy. We never want to stop buying. We want to continue to grow our business and our company. Recently we launched a bridge lending division called AMS Capital Partners and we’re lending on properties in and around New York City.

What is the hottest deal you have made to date?

We recently closed a deal in a Bayonne NJ for a 100,000-square-foot multifamily building that comes with surface parking lots. We received an approved redevelopment plan for the lots while under contract to build a few hundred extra units. That was value added before closing.

What is your secret weapon for sealing a deal?

Understanding the seller well and knowing his needs, motivations, etc. Once we know that, we are able to make a deal that benefits both of us very well. We look to forge good long-term relationships.

What is the hottest area for deals right now?

Can’t give away that secret!

What’s the best season for deals?

Every season is deal season.

If you had to work in a city other than New York, where would it be?

Probably Miami. I know I wouldn’t miss the 20 degree weather.
