Preux and Proper brings southern cuisine and hospitality to Los Angeles’ Fashion District

In the heart of Los Angeles’ fashion district you will find the soul of the American South through a dining discovery of unforgettable cuisine served with warm Southern hospitality. Preux and Proper offers guests a truly unique dining experience with a menu crafted with a modern twist on classic Southern soul food. Located in a historic building that has the appearance of New Orleans’ French Quarter with its brick façade and wrought iron gate accents, Preux and Proper captures the true spirit of Southern charm through the atmosphere and food to comfort the soul.

Partners and owners of Preux and Proper, Sammy Monsour and Joshua Kopel, wanted to share their Southern upbringing with Los Angeles and created their restaurant to reflect the values and culture of the South that built their passion for good food. Both partners were born and raised in the South, and have mixed traditional dishes inspired by their homes, with their own modern twists, to create a new experience of Southern cuisine. As soon as patrons enter the restaurant, they can see that these partners have successfully managed to encapsulate the spirit of Dixieland and the mix of cultural identities that contributed to America’s southern foundation.

“We wanted our food to honor the traditions and the heritage of the South through a mix of flavors, because that really reflects the story of the development of our country since it was created with a mix of many different cultures,” Monsour said. “Our menu was about creating something new from something familiar and honoring the cultural identities of people who developed the iconic flavors of the South.”

As executive chef of the restaurant Monsour lead the way in crafting the unique menu. The dining selections consist of traditional family recipes from themselves and their team, mixed with identifiable dishes you would find in the south and with a dash of a modern flare sprinkled in.

The two story restaurant features a relaxed bar room on the first floor and a sit down dining atmosphere on the second floor. The bar room menu offers casual classics such as a traditional Po’ Boy of fried ship or fried oyster, dressed with lettuce, tomato, pickles, coleslaw, creole mayo, and Fresno red hot sauce. Other Southern favorites for the bar menu include Nashville Hot Fried Chicken Sandwich, with chicken, house pickles, and coleslaw on a buttered bun; Carolina Barbecue Cubano, made with pulled pork, north country bacon ends, pickles, and a horseradish remoulade.

A Southern dining experience would not be complete without a hearty bowl of Monsour’s Cast Iron Seafood Gumbo Pot, made with Louisiana crawfish, tiger prawns, willapa bay oysters, pei mussels, rice, and tobacco leeks. Iconic favorites also include the Rabbit Jambalaya, curated with bone-in rabbit, asparagus and sugar snap pea risotto, min, clothbound cheddar, charred lemon, and thai basil; and the Dungeness Crab Hushpuppies, made with house bourbon barrel aged green hot sauce, boil spice, and charred poblano butter.

Other Southern classics include the Fried Mississippi Catfish, made with a buttermilk marinade, cornmeal crust, house pickles, celery salt, and red remoulade; and Braised Collards, with Lady Edison Country Ham, chino valley egg, and a house Fresno hot sauce. For tastes that are more adventurous and a little less traditional, try the Charred Octopus, made with crispy weiser fingerlings, anchovy remoulade, mustard frills, and blood orange mojo; or the Roasted Japanese Eggplant, cooked with shakshuka spice, walnut pralines, feta, and a horseradish chimichurri.

For a true southern Dixieland adventure, Preux and Proper hosts jazz nights on Thursday evenings, with a live jazz band playing classic sounds of the South to give guests an authentic taste of the culture east of the Mississippi.

Preux and Proper is located in the heart of L.A.’s fashion district at 840 South Spring Street, Los Angeles, CA. The restaurant and bar is open from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, and 4 p.m. to 12 a.m. Wednesday through Saturday. Sunday brunch is hosted from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday supper is from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m.
