The National Multifamily Housing Council (NMHC) elected James H. Schloemer, chief executive officer of Continental Properties Company, to serve a two-year term as the Council’s chair at its 2024 Annual Meeting.

“As rental housing providers navigate uncertain economic conditions and legislative and regulatory risks both in Washington, D.C. and in states throughout the country, I intend to highlight the widespread consensus that our nation is facing a housing affordability challenge fueled by a severe housing shortage and that the solution is greater supply,” said Schloemer. “We will also continue to leverage NMHC’s work building bridges — not just with industry partners, but also with housing advocacy groups to put forward policy solutions that expand housing supply.”

NMHC also welcomed Antonio Marquez, principal and managing partner of Comunidad Partners, as the newest NMHC officer. He will be the 2024-2026 NMHC secretary.

“I couldn’t be more excited for Jim Schloemer to become NMHC Chair and to welcome Antonio as an NMHC officer,” said NMHC President Sharon Wilson Géno. “As we have heard numerous times this week, we are at an inflection point when it comes to the creation of new housing. It is clear that the only way to lower costs and expand housing opportunity is to increase supply. With our new officer leadership, we will continue to make that a top priority for the organization. At the same time, through our strategic plan, we will be expanding access to NMHC — for both prospective members and current members seeking engagement opportunities.”

The remaining officers for 2024-2026 are: Vice Chair Julie Smith, chief administrative officer of The Bozzuto Group, Baltimore; Treasurer Laurie Baker, chief operating officer of Camden Property Trust, Houston and Immediate Past Chair Ken Valach, CEO of Trammell Crow Residential, Dallas.
