Arts Gowanus, an organization promoting and advocating for Brooklyn artists, along with developers Charney Companies and Tavros, will open “Tides at Gowanus Wharf,” a monumental art exhibition capturing the elevated yet gritty Gowanus aesthetic, while reflecting the growing residential neighborhood. This art show is organized by Arts Gowanus, in collaboration with Gowanus Wharf, a four-building campus of residential properties that is being developed in the community by Charney and Tavros.

“Tides at Gowanus Wharf” will be open for three days only – January 24, 25 and 26 at the newly-launched Union Channel, a new residential building and part of the Gowanus Wharf campus. Union Channel is located at 240 Third Ave. in  Brooklyn.

Arts Gowanus has curated this exhibition drawing on the neighborhood’s industrial heritage and showcasing works by local artists David Barthold, Gil Kuno, Jill Inbar, Jos Prol and Miska Draskoczy. The show features large-scale vinyl reproductions and original artwork displayed on the walls and suspended between columns, sculptural works placed on walls, plinths, cinder blocks or directly on the floor. All of the art is reflective of Gowanus, often using materials found in the neighborhood and even driftwood found in the canal.

“We wanted to lean into the character that we see in Gowanus Wharf’s branding, as well as making sure that all of the works reference the neighborhood’s industrial character,” said Johnny Thornton, executive director, Arts Gowanus. “And of course, all artwork was made by Gowanus artists.”

“Tides at Gowanus Wharf” is tied to the debut and start of leasing at Union Channel, the first of four residential buildings in the Gowanus Wharf project to welcome residents. Designed by Fogarty Finger, the striking nine-story building spans 230,000 square feet with a dimpled aluminum and undulating concrete façade.

“As developers, we have ensured that Union Channel will not only provide exceptional living experiences, but also reflect its Gowanus surroundings and foster a sense of community and connection among residents,” said Nicholas Silvers, founding partner of Tavros Capital. “We love Gowanus and are dedicated to building relationships and partnerships with the cultural nonprofits and programs that have been embedded in the neighborhood for decades.”

The exhibition is open from 12 noon to 6 p.m. Friday through Sunday.

“I couldn’t be more excited to contribute to an Arts Gowanus curated exhibition in our newly built residences,” said Sam Charney, principal, Charney Companies. “Our intent was to celebrate the incredible diversity and creativity of the Gowanus community. My lifelong passion for art is expressed in all of our buildings and aligns perfectly with our firm’s mission to showcase and support artistic expression.”
