Gilbane, in partnership with Strada Development LLC and the Center for Urban Community Services (CUCS), was joined by city and state officials to break ground on 1920 Turnbull, a $175 million affordable and supportive housing development located at 1920 Turnbull Avenue in the Castle Hill/Soundview neighborhood of the Bronx.
1920 Turnbull will deliver a 22-story building with 228 affordable rental apartments, including 137 permanent supportive housing units for formerly homeless individuals and families. The community will also include a 24/7 staffed lobby, outdoor recreation space, a fitness room, community room, bike storage, laundry facilities and other resident-focused amenities designed to foster health, connection and well-being. Completion is anticipated in March 2029.
“New Yorkers desperately need high-quality, inclusive housing in every neighborhood, and our work with Strada and CUCS will not only provide hundreds of new affordable units but lay the foundation for stability, health, and opportunity that will serve the Bronx for many years to come,” said Yarojin Robinson, senior vice president of affordable and mixed-income housing, Gilbane Development. “We’re proud to work with our partners and the City of New York on this transformative project and look forward to bringing this vision to life.”
1920 Turnbull is the first of two planned buildings, with Phase 2 set to add 207 additional affordable apartments, including 18 percent of units designated as permanent supportive housing for formerly homeless individuals and families. Phase 2 is expected to get underway within the next year pending city approvals.
“Breaking ground at 1920 Turnbull marks a milestone for Strada. The project reflects the approach we bring to all our work: creativity, persistence, and deep collaboration,” said Courtney Horwitz, Founder and Principal of Strada Development LLC. “We are grateful to Gilbane, CUCS, and our many government and banking partners for making this possible. We are proud that our first development will bring affordable homes, supportive services, and new opportunities to the Soundview community.”
CUCS will operate a 3,500-square-foot on-site office space providing residents with comprehensive supportive services, including case management, behavioral health support, benefits assistance, employment services and connections to community resources. By bringing these services directly into the building, CUCS helps residents maintain stable housing, improve their health and build the foundation for long-term well-being.
“For people who have experienced housing instability, getting the keys to an apartment is a major step, but it isn’t the end of the work. What matters next is having consistent support, people you know and trust, and the opportunity to build stability on your own terms. That is what CUCS will bring to 1920 Turnbull,” noted Dawn M. Pinnock, President & CEO, Center for Urban Community Services (CUCS). She adds, “We’re grateful to Gilbane and Strada Development for their partnership in bringing this project forward and creating more affordable and supportive housing for New Yorkers.”
The development is designed to receive Passive House and Enterprise Green Communities certifications, incorporating high‑performance insulation, energy‑efficient systems and fully electric heating and cooling. The site is also part of the New York State Brownfield Cleanup Program, and will be remediated during construction, ensuring long-term safety for residents.
The development team includes Gilbane Development as lead development partner, Strada Development LLC as co-developer, and CUCS as co-developer and service provider. Gilbane Building will serve as general contractor, with Magnusson Architecture and Planning as its architect.
