As the year comes to a close, we’ve seen some significant openings and plans. As retail finally begins to open next year at American Dream, expect even more excitement in 2020. Happy holidays!
All about Apparel
Aland, a Korean affordable apparel and general merchandise store that offers goods from emerging and independent designers, will launch a 10,000-square-foot flagship store at American Dream, the megamall opening in phases in New Jersey. The company has more than 20 locations in Asia and opened its first U.S. store in Brooklyn last year. Look for Marine Layer at 20 Prince Street. Tennessee-born apparel, accessories and more retailer Altar’d State made its New York area debut at The Westchester mall in White Plains and Roosevelt Field in Garden City.

Home Sweet Home
Ikea will open its smaller-format store at Rego Center in Queens. At 115,000 square feet, the prototype will offer take-out items and a display of furniture that can be delivered. Think of it as a compromise between its 220,000-square-foot traditional suburban stores and the 17,500-square foot Planning Studio that came to Manhattan earlier this year. After creating art at 81 Leonard Street for more than two decades, Nancy Pantirer (with partner Elaine Mitchell) has opened a full gallery at the site.

Sephora’s latest location will be at Atlantic Terminal Mall in Brooklyn. Tattoo-themed magazine Inked is opening a retail store and studio at 150 West 22nd Street.
Wining & Dining
Think of this as co-cooking: RXR Realty has invested in Kitchen United, a “kitchen as a service” concept that houses between 10 and 20 “ghost” kitchens that let restaurateurs grow their take-out service without investing in leasing and outfitting a permanent space. Locations will be in RXR’s and other properties in the region. Former Gracie Mansion chef Mitchel London will open a French diner at 279 Church Street. Cathedrale offers a taste of the Riviera at 112 East 11th Street in the Moxy East Village hotel.

First tea, now milk: Tulo House, a nut-based milk bar, has opened at the former site of The Tea Shoppe at 217 Mulberry Street. The bar, the first of its kind in the city, also offers a selection of organic snacks. Chef John Fraser’s JF Restaurants will open a new restaurant at 1740 Broadway, reported the New York Post. It’s Back
