Although some reports state that those who fled New York at the height of the pandemic may never return, late summer brought people back to the city, children (fingers crossed) to schools (at least part of the time) and more than a few retailers and restaurants. As I write this, reopening continues apace.
All About Apparel
Belstaff has relocated its only U.S. store from Madison Avenue to 2,000 square feet at 62 Gansevoort Street in the Meatpacking district. Included in the space is The Workshop, which focuses on local creators and offers complimentary re-waxing services and repairs. Nili Lotan opened at 188 Duane Street over the summer.
For the Kids
Lego will relocate and expand its flagship at Rockefeller Center, taking a two-level, 10,000-square-foot space at 45 Rockefeller Plaza that had been home to AllSaints, reports Commercial Observer. The store’s current location at the complex, at 620 Fifth Avenue, was just 3,500 square feet.
Just Gems
Madison Avenue will lose a little luster, as Chopard will relocate its flagship from 63rd Street to the Crown Building at 730 Fifth Avenue. The building is already home to Bulgari and Mikimoto, as well as Ermenegildo Zegna. Gurhan Atelier reopened its jewelry shop at 160 Franklin Street.
Wining & Dining
Celebrity chef Marcus Samuelsson has opened Marcus at NoHu Rooftop, a rooftop bar and restaurant at the EnVue, Autograph Collection hotel at Port Imperial in Weehawken, New Jersey. The menu consists of seasonally-inspired dishes and handcrafted cocktails, wine and beer. Temperance Wine Bar (which will offer 100 different wines by the glass) plans a location at 38-40 Carmine Street. Key to the deal was a large back yard and significant frontage for outdoor sipping.
Kimika, a Japanese-Italian concept, has opened at the base of the Nolitan Hotel at 40 Kenmare Street. Look for 16” on Center, a 13,000-square-foot food hall to make its New York City debut at the Starrett-Lehigh Building (201 West 26th Street) in mid-2021. Greek restaurant Avra Estiatorio has signed for 16,500 square feet at 1271 Avenue of the Americas. Ted’s Montana Grill also renewed its lease at the same location. At press time, Zazzy’s Pizza was scheduled to open at the former Rosario’s location at 173 Orchard Street by the end of September.
Ampia Rooftop has debuted on, yes, the roof of 100 Broad Street. The restaurant is the seventh in the city from husband-and-wife team Michele and Anisa Iuliano. At press time, OneSeed was to launch in the fall, according to Tribeca Citizen. Eateries Frenchette and Estela have debuted at The Rink at Rockefeller Center, offering limited edition picnic-style menus of small plates, snacks, seafood and signature beverages. Diners book reservations only and place prix-fixe orders for Frenchette on Wednesdays and Thursdays and Estela on Fridays and Saturdays. No walk-ins are permitted.
Closed by the pandemic since March, Mr. Chow reopened for outdoor dining at 121 Hudson Street just in time for Labor Day. Walker’s has also reopened at 16 North Moore Street.
Home Sweet Home
British kitchen design company Wren Kitchens will open its second and third U.S. showrooms at 2631 Berlin Turnpike in Newington, Connecticut and 2993 Hempstead Turnpike in Levittown, New York. Both showroom locations are scheduled to open by the end of 2020 or in early 2021. The top kitchen retailer in the U.K. will take 21,350 square feet in Connecticut and 19,500 square feet in New York and signed for its first manufacturing facility in the U.S. in Northeast Pennsylvania. Its first U.S. location is in Milford, Connecticut.
To Your Health
Brooklyn-based Century Medical & Dental has opened its first Manhattan location at 606 West 57th Street, The Max apartment building. SportsMed Physical Therapy will provide chiropractic, acupuncture and other wellness services at Ironside Newark (110 Edison Place) in spring 2021.
Dollar for Dollar
New Jersey has seen a slew of deals with discounter Dollar Tree. The retailer recently opened at the 699,350-square-foot Morris County power center. In Bergen County, a fall opening is anticipated for a 10,500-square-foot freestanding unit at 1187 Teaneck Road in Teaneck. Dollar Tree expects a third quarter debut at Clifton’s Lakeview Shopping Center, located at 64 Lakeview Avenue. In Union County, the retailer signed for a 12,680-square-foot inline space at Echo Plaza, located at Rte. 22 and Mountain Ave. Dollar Tree additionally inked a lease renewal and a 4,600-square-foot expansion of its existing store at Westmont Plaza, located at the intersection of Cuthbert Blvd. and MacArthur Blvd. in Haddon Township.
