With a successful holiday sales season now complete, retailers and restaurants are looking forward and expanding into new markets.
Art for Art’s Sake
Art gallery Sprüth Magers will make its New York City debut at 22 East 80th St. in the spring. Specializing in contemporary works from artists including Frank Stella, the gallery already has locations in Berlin, Los Angeles and London. Leon Tovar, which features works by Latin American artists, will relocate to a larger space, 26 East 64th St., a bit more than 10 blocks south of its previous location on East 75th Street.
American Dream
With The Avenue, American Dream’s luxury wing, finally open in East Rutherford, New Jersey appears to be gaining traction. In the Bal Harbour Florida eatery, Carpaccio is now open and Gucci has signed for a 10,000-square-foot store at the site. In addition, Saint Laurent will more than double its presence at the center, taking 4,200 square feet directly below its existing 3,200-square-foot store.
That’s Entertainment
The Caped Crusader is coming to Saks Fifth Avenue — at least for a bit. In a tie-in with the upcoming film “The Batman,” the retailer is hosting pop-up stores at several locations, featuring fashions for Batman and adversary Catwoman from Lanvin, EleVen by Venus Williams and more in March.
Wining & Dining
A La Mode Shoppe, the allergy-friendly, artisanal ice cream shop, is heading east, announcing a new location at 35 Newtown Ln. between Main Street and Park Place in the village of East Hampton, New York. Patiala Indian Grill has taken a second location, at 240 West 35th St.
Hoboken, New Jersey has a couple of new eateries: Sangria, an authentic Spanish Tapas restaurant with a full-service bar and outdoor seating, has opened its second location with 4,585 square feet at 800 Jackson St. The Whale Tea, a bubble tea café, will be opening its seventh location at 303 First St.
Los Tacos No. 1’s newest outpost is at Lafayette and Bleecker Streets. Fraunces Tavern (54 Pearl St.) may be one of the oldest restaurants in New York City, but it has just opened a piano bar upstairs, dubbed, yes, The Piano Bar Upstairs, open Thursday through Saturday. James Beard Award-winning Mökbar owner and chef Esther Choi will open her fourth restaurant at the Junction at Gateway One in Newark, New Jersey. It will occupy 950 square feet in the Market Hall area of Gateway One. Jing Fong, which closed its banquet hall in February 2020 because of the pandemic, now offers its dim sum in a downsized location at 202 Centre St.
Food, Glorious Food
The space at 49 Essex St. that had housed Pickle Guys until its move across the street in 2016 has found a new tenant: a bodega.
To Your Health & Beauty
Veteran stylist Julie Dixon has taken over the long-shuttered location of The Sweet Life (63 Hester St.) for a new salon called Joon Drop, named in honor of a candy store that occupied the space in the past. Planet Fitness has debuted at the Mayfair Shopping Center in Commack, New York.
For the Kids
Rumi, which offers toys and home goods, will come to Manhattan at 446 Broadway. The retailer has multiple locations in malls around the New York metro area, including Queens Center and Staten Island Mall; Atlantic Center and City Point in Brooklyn; Garden State Plaza, Menlo Park Mall and Newport Center in New Jersey and in Florida and Maryland. Other new locations have been announced for Connecticut, Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
Ship it to Me
Two grocery delivery apps have taken spaces on the Lower East Side: Gorillas at 294 Grand St. and Getir at 43 Essex St., a Turkey-based service that is expanding in the U.S. (It’s already in Chicago.)
Around the Country
New York names are heading to Sin City. Brooklyn’s legendary steakhouse Peter Luger (founded in 1887) is opening its first U.S. restaurant outside the city in 60 years, with a location at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas by year- end. The restaurant also has locations in Great Neck, New York and Tokyo. Meanwhile, the Paris Las Vegas hotel (also owned by Caesars Entertainment) will debut Martha Stewart’s first full restaurant, The Bedford, an immersive concept based on her farmhouse in Bedford, New York, with ingredients sourced from local purveyors and Stewart’s favorite sources.
The Taubman Realty Group and The Cordish Companies have signed an agreement to bring 62,000 square feet of dining and entertainment to Dolphin Mall, Miami’s largest outlet shopping center. Cordish will develop 32,000 square feet of interior space and an expansive 30,000 square foot outdoor plaza. Anchored by Sports & Social, one of the fastest-growing restaurant entertainment concepts in the United States, the new outdoor plaza will create a community gathering space for live music, sports watch parties, family- friendly events, cultural celebrations, food and beverage festivals and more. Sports & Social and the adjacent outdoor plaza are slated to open in winter 2022.
