Self-taught, mixed media artist and trained engineer Symone Currie is giving luxe jewelry lovers something to lust over. Her unisex demi-fine jewelry line, Metal x Wire (pronounced “Metal Wire”), pushes the envelope of modern accessories with its delicate balance of elegance and edgy heirloom pieces.
To Currie, Metal x Wire is an extension of herself. She recognized her distinct approach to design and style, having lived and worked all over the globe, and made the decision in 2019 to channel that skill and experience into jewelry.
“For most of my life, I was allergic to fashion jewelry — I couldn’t wear the bright statement pieces everyone else was wearing,” said Currie. “I learned from a young age the value of gold and finer metals. I’d save up and have one or two custom jewelry pieces made per year, so a lot of what I owned ended up being sentimental.”
This honed relationship between sentimentality and statement oozes through every link, clasp and pendant of Metal x Wire. Born in Kingston, Jamaica but based in the Americas, Metal x Wire is dedicated to celebrating the power of self. Each piece is meant to amplify the wearer’s own true style by offering the perfect addition of understated individuality that stands the test of time.
“Metal x Wire is not a fashion brand. I want the pieces to offer the flexibility to express yourself because your style is your own,” said Currie, as she looks to the future of expanding her curated collections. “I am interested in creating more interchangeable pieces so that you can buy one piece now and another later to build on each other or stand on their own.”
In 2021, the new brand caught the attention of international publications such as Elle Magazine and Popsugar. Metal x Wire’s current repertoire of styles includes The Classic Collection, The Forgotten Collection and, most recently, The Legacy Collection, which launches this year with a mammoth campaign inspired by West Indian culture. While each collection is different, they all exist along the common thread of timelessness and individuality.
A pillar of the Metal x Wire mission is to produce pieces that become centerpieces of the wearer’s legacy.
“Every piece of any collection is not meant to be transient. It is meant to be absolutely timeless and sustainable,” said Currie. Current collections boast the use of 14K solid gold and 925 sterling silver earrings, chains, bangles, medallion pendants and rings that can exist as heirlooms to be passed on for generations to come.
The Legacy Line, which officially launched at the end of January, is inspired by the West Indian cultural practice of gifting sterling silver and gold bangles to newborns as a sign of promise and prosperity for the new generation. It boasts three signature pieces: the Legacy Earrings, Legacy Bangle and Legacy Ring, all available in 14K solid gold or 925 sterling silver. Standing as its most cohesive collection yet regarding design, each Legacy piece embodies a soft roundness that tapers into bold pointed edges to capture the multi-dimensional essence of individuality.
Metal x Wire’s inaugural collection, The Classics, includes lightweight and hand-crafted pieces that can be paired with just about anything. “I want wearers to accessorize with whatever trends they like. Each Metal x Wire piece should be a core base piece that you can layer with your own changing style,” shared Currie — and The Classic Collection embodies just that.
The collection’s “Rita Hoops” earring can be easily slipped on to complete a head-to-toe look or tastefully stand on its own. The “Gordon Chain” features a 20-inch curb-cut chain link paired with Metal x Wire’s exclusive interlocking clasps for easy closure. “The Nomad” necklace pays homage to the nomads of the Caribbean and Jamaican diaspora and is designed for maximum style with minimal design. The necklace features a 24-inch chain that offers wearable versatility: connect the clasp at its lower end to wear as a typical pendant necklace or latch it at its midpoint to be worn as a lariat.
Metal x Wire’s Forgotten Collection is a love letter to history, dedicated to the stories that have fallen by the wayside and serves to remind wearers that the lives we lead are extraordinarily important, despite any mundanity. The collection features three embossed medallions, each embodying a symbol of human history in the Caribbean context to be worn as pendants.
Most recently, Currie was featured in the Jamaican publication Flair Magazine, in which she shared her current pursuits of a jewelry collaboration with a major design- er that is slated to launch in April 2022.
Currie’s ambition is to continually inspire her community with pieces dedicated to telling its stories by bringing the culture of “many one people” to the world. Metal x Wire’s high-quality jewelry is designed to allow the wearers to select pieces that represent their stories in the now and pass them on to future generations.
With undeniable passion and potential, Currie and Metal x Wire are growing forces to be reckoned with on the journey of celebrating the past, the present and the future through jewelry.
