J.Crew unveiled its most ambitious portrait campaign to date, celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Barn Jacket and its enduring place in wardrobes everywhere.

To mark the anniversary, J.Crew took the Barn Jacket on the road, photographing 160 people across New York City, Los Angeles, Austin, Boston and Chicago. The sweeping cast brings together open-cast discoveries, local legends, athletes, artists, musicians, designers, cultural tastemakers and some of the most recognizable faces in culture. Different cities, generations and points of view, all connected by one jacket and all wearing it entirely their own way.

“The scale of this campaign is extraordinary, but its power comes from the individuality within it,” said Julia Collier, chief marketing officer of J.Crew. “We brought together 160 people across five cities to show how one iconic piece can take on an entirely different life through every person who wears it. For 40 years, the Barn Jacket has moved across wardrobes, generations and communities without ever feeling fixed in one place or moment. This campaign celebrates that enduring relevance and the many people who continue to carry it forward.”

Shot by Robert Nethery in a direct, intimate portrait style, the campaign is at once a sweeping casting project, a cultural snapshot and a love letter to personal style. No two portraits, and no two Barn Jackets, feel the same.

Collective films bring the full cast into conversation, exploring personal style, the distinct character of each city and why the Barn Jacket continues to resonate across wardrobes and generations. Together, 160 individual stories create an expansive portrait of a J.Crew icon in motion: idiosyncratic, expressive, unexpected and never confined to one kind of person or one way of wearing it.

The campaign marks the next chapter in J.Crew’s ongoing celebration of its most recognizable styles. Beginning with “The Next Rollneck Generation” in Fall 2025, the brand has reimagined its heritage as a living platform for product innovation, personal expression and cultural storytelling. Now, J.Crew brings that same energy and ambition to the Barn Jacket, expanding what the icon can mean through the people who make it their own.

“The Barn Jacket has always had an ease and utility that make it incredibly versatile,” said Olympia Gayot, creative director of women’s and kids at J.Crew. “The shape is timeless, but it takes on a completely different personality depending on who is wearing it and how they style it. It can feel polished, rugged, feminine, oversized, familiar or unexpected. That ability to move effortlessly between wardrobes, generations, cities and points of view is exactly why it has remained such a lasting J.Crew icon.”

First introduced by J.Crew in 1986, the Barn Jacket has remained a defining expression of the brand’s American sportswear. At home in the city and the country, and just about everywhere in between, it has been a constant in wardrobes for 40 years. Its recognizable silhouette and effortless utility have made it a piece people return to and make their own.

Now, J.Crew adds the 2026 Barn Jacket to the collection, bringing a new proportion to the icon for its 40th anniversary. The season’s assortment includes 29 styles across women’s, men’s and kids, from signature cotton canvas to new fabrications, finishes and embellished interpretations.
