Mike Kerwin

Mike Kerwin is Senior Vice President of Investment Sales at commercial real estate brokerage Rosewood Realty Group. Kerwin, who joined the firm in 2010, has helped close hundreds of deals throughout New York City during his 14-year career. Earlier this year he represented the seller in the complex sale of a distressed eight building package in Greenpoint, Brooklyn for a deal price of $27.5 million.

While primarily focusing on multi-family properties, Kerwin has also represented both buyers and sellers in every type of transaction throughout his career. Whether it is a development, retail, office, multifamily, vacant, or distressed deal, Kerwin has seen it through. Kerwin graduated from the University of Maryland Business School in 2002 with a bachelor’s degree in Marketing.

How long have you been in the business?

I started my real estate career 14 years ago shortly after graduating college. I was selling gym memberships in suburban Maryland for a year when I realized I wanted to sell for the rest of my life, but it was time to change to an industry that was much more fun and rewarding.

What made you get into real estate?

I would have to say that my family was my biggest influence in choosing real estate as a career path. My grandfather was a developer in central New Jersey and my father was also in New Jersey real estate, both as an attorney and as a consultant overseeing major projects that revitalized whole communities. So I was around real estate my entire life, I just knew that I needed no ceiling on the size of deals I could chase—so I headed to New York City.

What’s the best season for deals?

I want to give a professional answer and say the winter season since everyone in the business will tell you there is no easier time to make deals than when everyone is trapped indoors. However, personally the absolute best season for making deals is the summer season. What’s better than celebrating a big deal by going to the pool or the beach?

What’s the best piece of advice you would give someone starting in the business?

I would tell them the same thing that I tell my team every day—never ever put down the phone.  Even though it’s 2017 and there are more ways to communicate than ever before, absolutely nothing beats a phone call when connecting to new clients.

What is the hottest borough for deals right now?

Manhattan will never slow down, the real estate is just too unique and too valuable. Over the last couple of years however, our firm has found the Bronx to be far and away the hottest borough, in particular Mott Haven and other areas of the South Bronx.

Who inspires you?

Now is my chance to score points with my wife. She went through 15 years of post-grad training in order to become the M.D. she is today, all while finding time for myself and our two children. Every day when she gets up at 4 a.m. to go see another patient, it shows me what true hard work and dedication really is, and it inspires me to do my own personal best, each and every day.
