Alamo Drafthouse Cinema has opened its long-awaited first Manhattan location in the 200,000-square-foot retail space at the base of Fosun’s 28 Liberty Street in Lower Manhattan. The cinema-eatery chain brings a 578-seat, 14-screen theater to the new retail destination below the office building’s landmarked plaza.
With 40 locations nationally, Alamo Drafthouse offers curated movie showings, food and drink menus that cater to local tastes and talent and a zero-tolerance policy for talking and cell-phone use during shows.
Alamo Drafthouse Lower Manhattan features The Press Room, a museum, letterpress print shop, bar and private event space. Alamo’s impressive archive of more than 60,000 letterpress film advertising plates span the history of 20th century cinema. In addition to a tap wall of 48 draft beers, the Press Room bar offers guests their own bespoke cocktail or a list of original Alamo Drafthouse craft cocktails.
“We welcome the community to enjoy Alamo Drafthouse’s one-of-a-kind movie-watching experience in 28 Liberty’s dynamic new retail space,” said Thomas Costanzo, global partner of Fosun Hive Holdings and executive president of its U.S. platform Four Trees. “The addition of Alamo Drafthouse to 28 Liberty further establishes the building as a central location for business, community and the arts.”
“This 37,000-square-foot theater maximizes existing base-building space to provide a citywide movie and dining destination with direct connectivity to six subway lines and easy access to Lower Manhattan’s mass transit hubs,” said Jason Berkeley, global partner of Fosun Hive Holdings and chief operating officer of Four Trees. “The transformation of the space into this best-in-class theater was completed despite the many challenges caused by the pandemic.”
During the past several years, Fosun has transformed the 60-story, 2.2 million-square-foot class-A office tower through a comprehensive repositioning program. In addition to extensive lobby, elevator and infrastructure upgrades, Fosun has created the expansive new retail space below the landmarked 28 Liberty plaza. The 60th floor of 28 Liberty is home to Union Square Hospitality Group’s Manhatta, which offers dining with 360-degree views of New York City, including New York Harbor, the East River, Hudson River, Brooklyn Bridge and Statue of Liberty. Fosun has programmed the Plaza with numerous culinary and cultural events, creating a destination for the Lower Manhattan community and all of New York City.
