Mark Eklund, President of OffSite Vision Holdings, Inc.

After 10 years of service on the board of directors of the Long Island Chapter of ASIS, Mr. Eklund continues his commitment to the security sector by donating his time as an advisor to the board of directors of ASIS Long Island and to the awards committee for ASIS International. For over thirty years, Mr. Eklund has delivered solutions to clients by combining wireless connectivity with technologies for mobile communications and tracking of assets and personnel. He is highly knowledgeable in machine-to-machine (M2M) solutions, telemetry, and GPS technology, with extensive experience in management and product development for wireless data products.

What made you decide to get into the security industry?
My neighbor, Jeffrey Levitt, who was the chairman for the Long Island chapter of ASIS International, asked for help to start a website for the chapter. At the time I owned a company that sold Fleet Vehicle GPS tracking Software as a Service. He said, “you are already in the Security Business. Join ASIS” and I did.

How long have you been in the security industry?
Upwards of 13 years. I have been on the board of directors holding positions starting as treasurer then vice chairman and then chairman, and always part of sub committees as well. Currently, I am an adviser to the board of the LI chapter and a member of the Washington DC Awards committee for ASIS International.

What were you doing before you got into this field?
Electronics favoring sensor technology and telecommunications for data services once the Internet became available.

What are the hottest industries/areas in NYC for security right now?
Life safety is my primary focus for the last 6 years. I see building intelligence that combines access control, video management and sensor inputs that automate buildings / staff reactions to potentially mitigate risks through intelligent notifications and actions.

What is an important risk management issue that you are dealing with in your dealings with building managers/owners today?
Creating accountability of all people and assets allows you access to analytics that allow for good decision-making during critical moments. If you don’t know who is in the facility, how can you manage it during an emergency?

What is your secret weapon for selling your life safety solutions?
There was a specific need in the medium to large corporations and we addressed it dead on. It’s not just one thing that works but our platform provides 80% or more of what is needed in every vertical. That is the secret… not sure I would call it a weapon but rather a tool.

Who inspires you?
First and foremost my parents, family and outside of that Ronald Regan. There was a low point in my career and his farewell address to the world kicked my butt back into focus and I picked up my head and moved forward to more success. “Always do your best, never be petty. Always remember others will hate you. But those that hate you don’t win unless you hate them; and then you destroy yourself.”
