Carl Hansen & Son, the 115-year-old, family-owned Danish furniture company, has leased 9,063 square feet at the famed Hammacher Schlemmer Building at 145 East 57th St., announced ABS Partners Real Estate LLC. The location will serve as Carl Hansen’s U.S. flagship retail store and showroom.
The move-in date is scheduled for this weekend, with the opening set for early September.
“We are delighted to report this lease,” says John Brod, partner of ABS, the leasing agent for the building. “Despite challenging market conditions, ABS was successful in securing this prestigious tenant.”
A key factor in the lease is that ownership reconfigured the space from “ground, lower and mezz levels” by adding an internal staircase, Brod said, “so as to combine the floors to easily flow throughout. Thus, what were three distinct levels now combines the lower level with the ground floor, so that they are both visually and commercially connected.:
Since 1926, this space had been home to Hammacher Schlemmer, the American furniture retailer and catalogue company founded in 1848. The company departed in February 2023.
The landlord, BiC 57th Street LLC and 145 East 57th Street Associates LLC, was represented by ABS Partners Real Estate’s Brod, Mark Tergesen and Benjamin Waller. Atlantic Retail NYC brokers Evan Clements and Amanda Keller represented the tenant.
