With darkness falling at 5:30 p.m. and the cold weather setting in, there’s only one thing I want to do when I get home from work: sit on my couch under a soft blanket, watch The Great British Bake Off, and knit.
Now, you may be thinking that knitting is an outmoded pass time, but let me tell you. It is exciting. It is challenging. It is rewarding. If your day is in need of a small victory, consider the satisfaction of a perfectly knitted row that you created with your own two hands.
But I must confess, I am not a Grade-A knitter. The most complicated thing I’ve made is a scarf, and I was just excited that I remember to knit and purl the rows in the right order. So I don’t know why I thought I was ready to try a sweater, but I was so enticed by the We Are Knitters Navy Winter Collection that I had to give it a try.
I started my Wakatobi sweater the day I got it, and it has taken me about a week to get to the armpits on the first panel (or…what I think are the armpits?). But my slow progress has not stopped me from inviting a grand total of three people to my apartment to look at the rectangle I have so far. I even have a blue stripe!
The other great thing about We Are Knitters is that the yarn is wonderful. The Wakatobi sweater uses the wave yarn, and that alone is making my wonky sweater-to-be look pretty cool. It is also softer than I expected, but to be fair, I was expecting itchy wool.
In between episodes of The Great British Bake Off (I’m not caught up on the current season yet, but so far, I’m cheering for Henry), I’ve also discovered the temptation to dive into knitting culture. We Are Knitters has some pretty good online resources, like knitting videos to explain stitches. In one of my weaker moments, I even considered hosting a knitting party.
Overall, I’ve been struggling to get through my workdays without daydreaming of working on my sweater, so I would say that We Are Knitters kits do exactly what they are designed to do: pull you into the wonderful, captivating joys of knitting.
