Mega Contracting Group, a full-service development, general contracting, and construction management firm, announced the 10 winners of the company’s annual scholarship award. Mega started the initiative in 2015, each year awarding $1,000 scholarships to at least 10 recipients.

To be eligible for the scholarship, applicants must be living in an affordable residential building constructed or renovated by Mega and must be enrolled in a college or trade school.

Applicants then choose from a list of five essay questions to answer, such as how they feel college or a trade school will help better themselves, how they are unique to the world and how the COVID-19 pandemic has changed their personal and career aspirations, among others. The funding is not restricted and can be used for any school-related items, including tuition, books, supplies and campus fees.

“We at Mega have always been excited to see our buildings grow from a hole in the ground and become a part of the neighborhood landscape, or see our renovation breathe new life into a forgotten structure,” said Hercules Argyriou, vice president of Mega Contracting Group. “As a socially responsible developer and builder, we feel an even greater sense of accomplishment when bricks and mortar become homes where children are born, grow up with their families and dream of building their future. The scholarship program was established as a way to give back to the communities that helped us build our company and to help our youth build a better future.”

“Throughout my essay, I mentioned struggles and challenges within myself and my degree… the coronavirus pandemic was a very dark time… however the whole situation illuminated when I stepped up, when I became my own agent of change, when I decided to use what I’ve learned so far in my educational journey and put it to practice, when I became applicable in my community, and when I decided to be on the frontline of the pandemic to take part of the initiative,” said Eugene Manu, a recipient of the award.

Mega is committed to being a good neighbor and working in harmony with the community by encouraging local and MWBE hiring. Working primarily in the affordable housing sector, Mega believes that business is driven by people, for people.
