The National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA) announced E-J Electric Installation Co. (E-J Electric) is the recipient of two 2017 NECA Project Excellence Awards for work performed on a Grand Central Partnership project at Pershing Square Viaduct, and a transmission line upgrade project for United Illuminating Company in Connecticut.

It is with immense gratitude and pleasure that we accept these prestigious awards from the National Electrical Contractors Association,” said E-J Electric President and CEO Anthony Mann. “At E-J Electric, we take pride in completing quality electrical projects for our clients. Our Pershing Square Viaduct and Milvon to Devon Transmission Line project teams approached both projects with enthusiasm and innovation in mind.”

NECA’s Project Excellence Awards highlight the remarkable work performed by the associations member-contractors throughout the United States. The awards recognize companies for their exceptional commitment, professionalism and ingenuity when delivering an electrical project across 11 different market sectors: commercial/institutional, design build, educational, energy solutions/green building, healthcare, industrial, international, overhead transmission, residential, street lighting/traffic signal, and substation/interconnection.

Pershing Square Viaduct Project

E-J Electric received the 2017 NECA Project Excellence Award in the Street lighting/Traffic Signals Under $1 Million category for work on the Pershing Square Viaduct. E-J performed this project for the Grand Central Partnership in conjunction with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA)/Metro-North Railroad (Metro-North). Located directly in front of Grand Central Terminal, Pershing Square Viaduct, a small bridge that provides a safe entryway for visitors to access the terminal from 42nd Street, now features new LED lighting and custom covers to conceal all exposed wiring. In addition to installing LED lighting and covers, E-J Electric installed programmable controllers to create endless lighting color variations.

“With these new LED lights, the Pershing Square Viaduct will serve as a beacon to Grand Central Terminal,” said former MTA Chairman and CEO Thomas Prendergast. “Not only will it [LED lighting] help customers find their way to Grand Central, it will foster a sense of shared pride and community through stunning light displays that celebrate holidays and special occasions.”

Milvon to Devon Transmission Line Upgrade Project

E-J Electric received the 2017 NECA Project Excellence Award in the Overhead Transmission Over $1 Million Category for enhancing the reliability of the Milford 115-kV Transmission Line. E-J Electric rebuilt two 115kV circuits on independent steel monopole lines that run parallel on both the north and south side of the rail between Milvon Substation to the Devon Substation. By removing existing United Illuminating Company (UI) conductors, shield wires and bonnets, E-J Electric installed 43 new steel monopoles on drilled pier foundations, larger conductors and optical ground wire (OPGW). The project included coordination with Metro-North and United Illuminating Company to string over a mile of continuous conductor across Interstate 95 and within a timeframe permitted by Connecticut Department of Transportation to install a new pole line.
