American footwear brand Hoka is launching the Tecton X 4, the lightest version of its technical trail shoe, developed for competitive use on demanding terrain.
The shoe is built around the new Profly X platform, which combines carbon fiber plates, foam and a race-specific sole geometry. According to Hoka, these components work together to provide a cushioned, stable landing followed by a powerful toe-off.
Midsole and Upper Updated
The midsole consists of two layers of polyether block amide (PEBA) foam, which Hoka describes as the lightest and most resilient foam in its range. Two parallel carbon fiber plates have been adapted for greater responsiveness; in combination with the MetaRocker sole shape, they are designed to enable a more efficient transition and a more powerful toe-off.
The upper is made from Matryx Micro, a lightweight, durable and water-repellent woven material. An extended knit collar is designed to keep dirt and debris out of the shoe, while the adjusted lacing system ensures a more secure fit. An additional lacing option has been added for marathon distances.
Thinner Outsole
The outsole features Vibram Megagrip Litebase. This makes the sole about 40% to 50% thinner and the tread about 25% to 30% lighter than previous versions, without compromising performance. 4-millimeter traction lugs increase the contact surface with the ground for better grip on the trail.
