A Closer Look at Mimi Tran Designs 2018 Bridal Collection
Engagement season, the holiday period between Thanksgiving and Valentine’s Day that’s known as the most popular time to pop the question, is quickly coming to an end. Shortly after the newly minted soon-to-be brides bask in the ooo’s and ahh’s from showing off their new left hand sparklers, their focus turns to planning the perfect wedding and finding the perfect dress.
For modern and romantic style brides, San Joese-based emerging designer Mimi Tran, who is based out of San Jose, California, can make their dream dress become a reality. Mimi Tran recently launched her first bridal collection for Spring 2018. This collection focuses on fourteen bridal looks, and each dress showcases its own personality and style, just like each individual bride who wears the dress.
The collection ranges from lace princess-style ball gowns and flowing A-line cuts for more traditional or romantic brides, to sleek sheaths and transparent skirts for a more modern eccentric look. The fabrications range from silk crepe and tulle to silk satin and hand cut French lace. The dresses also feature extravagant embellishments, including Swarovski crystals, hand beaded pearls, and sequin flowers, all carefully placed to call attention to each gown’s focus to detail.
Mimi Tran’s collection also features the top trends that were featured in the 2018 runway shows during bridal fashion week. 2018 is looking to be the year of the more functional wedding dress, as one of the frequent style sightings on the runway was the detachable skirt. Mimi Tran features this design which can take the traditional bride from isle to dance floor, who wants both a full cathedral train for the ceremony, but still needs to be able to move around freely to dance the night away with her new husband.
Another major trend off the 2018 runways that is also featured in Mimi Tran’s gowns are 3D flower designs, which gives the gowns more dimension and eye-popping details. Mimi Tran’s gowns also featured other big 2018 trends, including high necklines and bridal wear shorts with illusion overlay skirts.
As with Mimi Trans designs, her bridal line offers unexpected silhouettes and fashion-forward designs that resonate with the refined, classic, yet contemporary woman. In true bridal fashion, Mimi Tran fuses traditionalism and contemporary artistry, with absolute full-bodied white tones to dominate the gowns and balance out any daring cuts or styles with the traditional color.
Mimi was born in Vietnam and emigrated at the age of seven to Paris where she attended boarding school and was recognized as a gifted child in free style art. At the age of 14, her family left Paris and moved to the United States. She later graduated from college with a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering and began her career at Cisco. Later she earned an MBA in International Business Management from Santa Clara University, but her artistic side kept pulling her toward means of creative expression.
Three years ago, Mimi began her design career first specializing in form-fitting cocktail dresses that shape the body and accentuate feminine curves. She then moved into formal gowns and explored various fabrics, textures, and beading, which led to her to creating her first bridal line.
Mimi was fascinated with weddings as a child. As a Vietnamese immigrant in Paris who sometimes felt isolated, she found solace in dreaming about her future. As she got older, she realized that every bride also dreams about their future and the idea of new beginnings, unexpected journeys, and beauty and love, which provided her with countless design inspiration that mirrored her love for bridal wear.
