This year, the ninth annual Cheryl Diamond NYC 5K SCHLEP Breast, Ovarian, and Prostate Cancer Run / Walk was hosted by American Friends of Rabin Medical Center (AFRMC) at Robert F. Wagner Jr. Park in Battery Park, New York City, before the Celebrate Israel Day Parade.
AFRMC honored survivors and people who have died from breast, ovarian and prostate cancer at the ninth annual NYC 5K SCHLEP, bringing together hundreds of participates of all ages from the New York tri-state area. Dozens of fundraising teams were formed to remember loved ones that have battled these terrible diseases. In efforts to create a community of support, AFRMC invited the community to recommend survivors or family members of those who have passed to share their personal stories with others who are connected to the struggle against breast and ovarian cancer.
Speakers that day included AFRMC Executive Director, Dr. Joshua Plaut, Warren Diamond of American Self Storage, and Kimberly and Katherine Corp of the Rockette Alumnae, followed by a performance of the Star Spangled Banner by Dakota Diehl.
The crowd was touched with heartfelt speeches about personal experiences with breast, ovarian, and prostate cancers and the importance of their eradication.
Corporate event sponsors of this event included American Self Storage, Altman Lighting, PJ Bernstein Deli, CBRE, Colliers International, IDB Bank, Island Architectural Woodwork, Pilates on 5th, Shleppers Moving & Storage, and Storage Blue. AFRMC also proudly partnered again with Central Synagogue, the Celebrate Israel Parade, Congregation Ohab Zedek, The 14th Street Y, El Al Israel Airlines, United Synagogue of Hoboken, Metropolitan Synagogue NYC, the Israeli-American Council, the Consulate General of Israel in NY, JCP Downtown, the Jewish Community Relations Council, the Jewish Center, JScreen, Sharsheret, Tamid the Downtown Synagogue and Temple Emanu-el before the Celebrate Israel Parade. Major teams included Miles for Melissa, Rockette Alumnae and Friends, Team Bubby, Julia Belkin’s Team, Pammie’s Posse, Team NYC GRRRLs, and the Kugelman Family. Runners and walkers of all ages were encouraged to “schlep” before they marched, in a day that exemplified true solidarity with Israel.
With over 500 supporters, proceeds from the Cheryl Diamond NYC 5K Schlep benefited Israel’s Rabin Medical Center’s BRCA Multidisciplinary Clinic serving individuals at high risk of breast, ovarian and prostate cancer, as well as funding research to find cures for these BRCA-related cancers at Rabin Medical Center’s Davidoff Cancer Center – a world class facility for the treatment and prevention of cancer.
