Responding to the staggering COVID-19 crisis in India, UJA-Federation of New York announced $200,000 in grants to four organizations that are working on relief efforts in the country: JDC, The Afya Foundation, IsraAID and Gabriel Project Mumbai.
“It’s heartbreaking to see the scenes from India today, and we hope our aid will spur others to join the relief effort,” said Eric S. Goldstein, CEO, UJA-Federation of New York.
The grants are focused on providing equipment and relief in hard-to-reach and especially vulnerable communities in India.
JDC, UJA’s primary international partner that has long worked in India, is conducting a multipronged relief effort. The $60,000 grant will go toward a partnership with the Israeli government in providing Israeli-made ventilators to hospitals. JDC is also working with the local relief organization SEWA International to deliver medical equipment from Israel to hospitals and provide food and humanitarian relief to communities in need. JDC is also part of a coalition effort to recruit American and Israeli doctors to provide virtual case consultation and coaching to Indian doctors on the front lines. This grant will enable Afya to work with Sewa International and provide critical medical supplies including CPAPs, BIPAPs, ventilators, oxygen masks, stretchers, medical beds, exam tables, and more to vulnerable communities.
The IsraAID grant of $45,000 will help procure medical equipment and help launch remote stress and trauma prevention programs and assess long-term public health needs.
Gabriel Project Mumbai (GPM), which donated $45,000, works in the urban slums of Mumbai and rural tribal villages of Maharashtra, India. This grant will help GPM provide food packages and medical supplies, run medical clinics, establish a new COVID-19 vaccination center in the heart of the Kalwa slum and provide rural hospitals with COVID-19 educational visual aids.
