When the Nazis passed the Nuremberg Laws in 1935, Fredy Hirsch was a nineteen-year-old German Jew – and openly gay. He was deported to the Theresienstadt Ghetto and later Auschwitz. In Auschwitz, he set up a day care center, became much admired and never hid his sexuality.
Director Rubi Gat’s film “Dear Fredy” tells the story of Hirsch’s remarkable life and mysterious death – which happened on the eve of a revolt that never came to pass.
