Miami-based biophilic art and design studio Plant The Future is partnering with Art Basel Miami Beach to present “The Spanish Moss Sanctuary”, a live plant art installation created by co-founder, creative director and lead artist Paloma Teppa. The installation features a series of mid to large-scale, multi-tiered floating gardens created from live Spanish moss that will hang from the ceiling and be visible for visitors as they descend the escalator between the second and first floors at the fair. The hanging art will be complemented by organic-shaped ceramic seats resembling river stones on the show floor, thus creating a visual representation of the natural world to convey a deeper connection to nature. By maintaining the plants’ natural texture and feel, the interactive installation offers visitors a serene, immersive experience and a tranquil retreat from the bustling energy of the fair where one can rest, meditate and contemplate.

“Through my work with plants, I create opportunities for humans to reconnect with the natural environment, and thus with the essence of nature itself,” explains Teppa. “In doing so we can all become a little more conscious of how entwined we are in the interworking of Mother Earth. All living beings –  humans, animals and plants – we are all children of the same mother.”

Plant The Future seeks to create a deep connection between art and nature, inviting viewers to reflect on our spiritual relationship with the natural world. Teppa’s ethereal pieces remind us of nature’s mystical beauty and fragility, acting as portals to the soul and guiding us back to balance and introspection.

Plant The Future’s projects have ranged extensively over the years including large format moss murals, giant sculptures, hanging installations, interior and exterior landscape design, rooftops, stage design, window displays, lighting and art exhibitions among many others. As an early pioneer in the use of preserved moss for art and design installations, Plant The Future is constantly developing and experimenting with new techniques, formats and other materials. Some of their most renowned work includes projects for 1 Hotels, Faena Hotels, Related Group, Terra Group, Starbucks, Adidas, Mercedes Benz, Dior and LVMH among others.

“The Spanish Moss Sanctuary” live plant installation will be on display from December 4-8, 2024, at Art Basel Miami Beach, located at the Miami Beach Convention Center.
