The Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) announces that FIT President Joyce F. Brown will be honored, in recognition of her remarkable legacy and achievements, at its Annual Gala, to be held April 1, 2025, at the Glasshouse in New York City. Dr. Brown’s 27 years of service to the institution will be celebrated by distinguished guests and alumni from the fashion and creative industries, higher education, and government.
Hosted by legendary FIT alumni Michael Kors and Nina Garcia, Elle editor-in-chief and Project Runway judge, the fundraising event will include a salute from students and special tributes from Tommy Hilfiger, founder and principal designer of Tommy Hilfiger Global; Amber Valletta, supermodel and FIT sustainability ambassador; Deborah Roberts, 20/20 co-anchor and award-winning ABC News correspondent; and other guests to be announced.
“I’m excited to once again co-host the FIT Annual Gala, and to shine a spotlight on the incredible work Dr. Brown has done over the last 27 years,” said Michael Kors. “I still remember fondly my time at FIT and the incredible work and dedication of the faculty, and the school’s impact on its students and the industry at large has only grown since then. I’m honored to be able to support them throughout the year.”
“For nearly three decades, Dr. Brown has shaped FIT into a hub of creativity and progress,” said Nina Garcia. “As a proud alumna, it is clear to me that her vision has empowered countless students, leaving an indelible mark on fashion, the creative industries, and beyond.”

Dr. Brown was appointed in 1998, becoming FIT’s first female and first African American president. A visionary leader in higher education, and FIT’s longest-serving president, her tenure represents one of the most significant periods of growth and progress at the college. In August 2024, she announced she would be stepping down at the end of the 2024–25 academic year. Among her accomplishments at FIT, Dr. Brown has integrated the latest advancements in technology, helped diversify the creative industries, and moved the institution and the industries it serves toward sustainability. Through this work, she has empowered thousands of students to fulfill their potential and realize their dreams within a campus community defined by innovation, inclusivity, and excellence.
Under Dr. Brown’s stewardship, FIT will soon open the doors to its first new building in 40 years. This state-of-the-art academic building, located on 28th Street, is a testament to the vision and unwavering commitment of Dr. Brown. As a tribute to her enduring influence, the college has established the Dr. Joyce F. Brown Legacy Fund to advance FIT’s commitment to providing a world-class learning environment where the values of creative freedom and social good will always thrive. The fund ensures that her vision continues to guide the college for generations to come.
