Packing the Perfect Carry-On Bag for Long Haul Flights

When embarking on a long-haul flight, packing the perfect carry-on bag is critical to ensure a pleasant journey. As a professional travel advisor, here are some of my favorite tips on packing the perfect carry-on bag.

First, know your airline’s regulations for size and dimensions and choose accordingly. Most airlines allow for a small suitcase and a personal item, such as a handbag or laptop bag. However, many budget and smaller airlines have stricter carry-on policies, so double-check before choosing the right bag for your travels. Ideally, your best bet is a small, wheeled suitcase and an easily carried personal item. Find one with separate compartments, making it functional to access necessary items and maximize the space in your carry-on luggage. We love using expandable tote bags or backpacks.

Start with the basics: passport, boarding pass, and travel documents. Place these in a zipped pocket or a document holder and have copies saved in your email, cloud storage, or phone in case of loss or theft.

Next, bring along items to help you stay comfortable during the flight. A neck pillow, eye mask, earplugs, and noise-canceling headphones are crucial for getting some sleep on a long-haul flight, reducing jet lag upon arrival. Do not forget to pack a lightweight sweater, jacket, or small blanket, as airplanes tend to get chilly.

It is also necessary to keep yourself hydrated during air travel. Pick up a water bottle after security or bring along a reusable one and take advantage of many water stations that have become a mainstay at larger airports. Do not count on the airline food; pack any specific snacks beforehand. Flying is very dehydrating, so drinking enough water and avoiding overconsumption of caffeine and alcohol is extremely helpful if you want to land feeling refreshed.

Though most airlines have entertainment systems, they can be finicky and are not always working, so it is always a good idea to bring a tablet or device with pre-downloaded entertainment to pass the time. Be sure to organize your chargers and adaptors in a zippered pouch to avoid cords getting lost and tangled in your carry-on backpack or tote while also keeping them accessible to in-flight.

Toiletries are also vital for an enjoyable long-haul flight and ensure you arrive refreshed. Pack a toothbrush and toothpaste, face wipes, hand sanitizer, moisturizer, and lip balm, as the dry cabin air can be harsh on your skin. When packing these items, be mindful of TSA and specific airline regulations restricting the types and amounts of liquids, gels, and aerosols allowed on board. All liquids must be in containers no more than 3.4 ounces (100ml) and placed in a clear, plastic, resealable bag. Check TSA and your airline’s website for more information on their specific rules and regulations.

In addition, if you are checking luggage, it is also important to pack for unexpected situations. Be sure to bring a change of clothes, necessary medications, and any valuables in your carry-on. It is always better to be prepared.

Staying organized and prepared when packing for a long-haul flight can make all the difference in your comfort and enjoyment during your journey. Remember to pack the essentials for comfort, wellness, and entertainment. With these tips, you will be ready to embark on your next adventure easily.
