With another recent Portuguese scouting trip under our belt, we are excited to share our new favorite hidden Portuguese gem: São Lourenço do Barrocal.
In the captivating Alentejo countryside, São Lourenço do Barrocal debuted as a 5-star luxury hotel estate in 2016. Originally an ancient farming village, this vast property on 780 hectares of shady oak, cork, and olive trees alongside vineyard, and gardens has been in the same family for 200 years. Still, an active working farm producing private-label wine, olive oil, and agriculture, São Lourenço do Barrocal offers a refreshingly unique experience, flawlessly blending quiet elegance with the traditional Alentejo spirit.
Under the guidance of the 8th generation to live on the property, the current São Lourenço do Barrocal was born with a commitment to sustainability, authenticity, and community. Dedicated to preserving the land’s precious resources and supporting the region’s local economy, São Lourenço do Barrocal successfully achieved organic certification of the entire estate, employs area residents, and sources products from the farm and neighboring communities.

The hotel is located in the town’s original, preserved structures and boasts 40 rooms, suites, and cottages. Each is housed amongst the community’s picturesque, verdant, vine-covered, whitewashed stone buildings. The spaces have been meticulously renovated, and original items from the farm have been repurposed and transformed into unique works of art and design found throughout the grounds. The rooms are spacious, comfortable, and impeccably decorated in warm hues and soft textiles, highlighting contemporary Alentejo design and providing every amenity one would expect from a 5-star property.
We particularly enjoyed the Farm Rooms. Once home to the farm workers, the rooms are centrally located in the village and have a well-appointed, sizable outdoor patio with spectacular views of the surrounding countryside. Plenty of cottages and villas offer the same luxe space for larger groups or families with two-to three-bedroom configurations. Choose the One-Bedroom Barn Cottage for a splurge-worthy stay. Boasting a grand, covered private terrace with vast and stunning estate views, it is an excellent space to enjoy breakfast delivered to your room or an evening cocktail.
São Lourenço do Barrocal delivers big when it comes to exceptional cuisine. Using produce picked from the garden and locally and humanely sourced ingredients, the expertly curated menus at each of the hotel’s two restaurants provide a delightful and tasty culinary experience bursting with fresh flavors while utilizing traditional recipes with an inventive twist.
Unlike many hotels, which over plan and “go big,” São Lourenço do Barrocal is the antithesis. There is plenty of peaceful space here, whether exploring the gardens, stables, and vineyards or relaxing poolside with little more than nature and the sky surrounding you.
Given the thoughtfulness put into the hotel’s overall concept, the availability of varied wellness activities and immersive experiences is no surprise. There is a full-service, organic spa featuring Susanne Kaufmann products, a well-appointed gym, and activities such as biking, yoga, pilates, hiking, horseback riding, and fishing, to name just a few. For the little ones, kids can splash around in the dedicated children’s pool or participate in organized activities such as treasure hunting and children’s garden workshops.
Participate in a cooking class and perfect classic Alentejo techniques alongside the hotel’s talented culinary team, spend an afternoon with a mixologist for a cocktail-making experience, or schedule a pottery workshop where you can learn this ancient craft from nearby artisans.
During our stay, we opted for and enjoyed the flower-arranging workshop. Don your apron, pick up your garden shears, and accompany your florist guide and forage for seasonal blooms in the garden before trying your hand at the art of floral design.
We strolled in the olive groves, learned about the estate’s olive oil production, and, after, tasted the year’s bounty paired with delectable cheeses and charcuterie.
Experiencing São Lourenço do Barrocal’s wine production is a must for wine enthusiasts. Book a curated food and wine pairing or a vertical tasting where, along with your sommelier, you can compare and contrast the evolution of a single vintage throughout the years.
São Lourenço do Barrocal is situated close to Lake Alqueva and set squarely in the Alqueva Dark Sky Reserve, making it one of the first destinations for starlight tourism. There are 3,000 square kilometers of protected area from light pollution, allowing for dazzling stargazing on-site or at the nearby Alqueva Lake Observatory with an expert astronomer.
Exploring neighboring towns is also worth the short trip. Tour the medieval castle in the nearby hilltop village of Monsaraz, explore the town of Évora, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, or shop for ceramics in the quaint village of São Pedro do Corval, the largest pottery center in Portugal.
