Upper House Returns Their Innovative Bi-Annual Art Program this October with ‘Within’—An Immersive Performance Experience

Upper House has always believed art belongs inside daily life; not behind a ticket barrier, not cordoned off but woven into the moments you already inhabit.

This month, that belief takes its most ambitious form yet, putting guests inside an immersive, multisensory installation not because they sought it out, but because they checked in. The brand transforms three of Asia’s most celebrated houses into cultural stages for “Within,” an immersive performance experience.

The program was created in collaboration with One Hundred, an international studio whose team has spent 17 years shaping immersive theatre. The group is part of the creative force behind “Arcane: Immersive” and Punchdrunk’s “Sleep No More,” and has collaborated with Gucci, Valentino and Stella McCartney. Their work brings together sound artists, spatial designers, lighting specialists, choreographers and costume makers to build a sensorial world where the audience is placed in the center of the show, creating an immersive and emotional experience.

Each house holds a different world, rooted in the city around it. Hong Kong is “The Dreamer,” drawing on the house’s upward journey through sky and cloud. Chengdu is “The Phoenix,” where myth and garden come to life. Shanghai is “The Collector,” built around the city’s love of artifacts and ritual.Across three consecutive weekends— Upper House Hong Kong (9 – 11 Oct), Chengdu (16 – 18 Oct), Shanghai (23 – 25 Oct)—guests select a time that fits the shape of their day.

Then the house takes over. A porter appears. The world shifts. Every corridor, every room becomes part of the narrative. A 30-minute immersive journey begins in the lobby and guests are guided through four distinct areas of the house, ending at the bar with a bespoke cocktail. They don’t watch the performance—they enter it.

Most art hotels hang work on walls. Upper House has done the opposite—the space you’re staying in and the work itself are the same thing. For one weekend per city, there’s no separation between guest and audience. The hotel isn’t hosting art—it is the art.

THE DETAILS: Live performance dates are Hong Kong (October 9 –11), Chengdu (October 16 – 18) and Shanghai (October 23 – 25). Tickets are complimentary with exclusive early access for members. Limited spaces available.
