Mikhal Dekel
Tehran Children Book Talk with Author Mikhal Dekel and Gal Beckerman

TUESDAY, JULY 28 | 2 PM ET on Zoom

Tehran Children is the true story of Polish-Jewish child refugees who escaped the Nazis and found refuge in Iran. Mikhal Dekel, the daughter of one of these children, spent eight years extensively researching and traveling around the world to write a far-reaching account of Jews who found asylum in Muslim lands. Blending memoir with historical research, Dekel reveals a new Holocaust narrative.
Dekel will be joined by Gal Beckerman, journalist and award-winning author of When They Come for Us We’ll Be Gone, for a discussion of the book and this little-known history.

“Children Of The Inquisition” Film And Discussion

THURSDAY, JULY 30 | 2 PM ET on Zoom

Children of the Inquisition follows a diverse group of descendants of the Spanish and Portuguese Inquisitions as they unravel their complex and often hidden Jewish identity. Each is on a personal quest to discover and explore his or her distant Sephardic roots. Join us for a film discussion* with filmmaker Joe Lovett and members of the Sephardic community.

Trauma Studies, Creativity, and the Second Generation

TUESDAY, AUGUST 4 | 2 PM ET on Zoom

Children of Holocaust survivors (often referred to as “2Gs”, for second generation) are no strangers to intergenerational trauma. Children of survivors process and cope with inherited trauma in remarkably diverse ways, often through transmutation in the creative process or sublimation into other activities. In this discussion, clinical psychologist Irit Felsen – a trauma specialist focusing on Holocaust survivors and their children – will be joined by award-winning author and poet Elizabeth Rosner (Survivor Cafe, Speed of Light) for a discussion of how trauma is passed on and manifested from generation to generation.

Survivor Songs: The Amazing Stonehill Recordings

THURSDAY, AUGUST 6 | 2 PM ET on Zoom

In the summer of 1948, amateur folklorist Ben Stonehill recorded more than 1,000 songs from Holocaust refugees who were being housed temporarily in the lobby of the Hotel Marseilles on New York’s Upper West Side. Stonehill’s efforts preserved for posterity a rich repertoire of songs in Yiddish as well as Polish, Czech, and Hebrew. The recordings are now being disseminated on the web by Yiddish scholar Miriam Isaacs through a partnership with the Center for Traditional Music and Dance.
Join us for this special online multimedia program, in which Isaacs will reveal the inside story of Ben Stonehill’s heroic project, and share some of the remarkable performances Stonehill captured on wire recordings. Additionally, special guest musician Vladimir Fridman will perform songs from the Stonehill archive.

Seminar on Family Reunification

The STAJE Summer Seminar – Advanced Institute was held online July 6 – 8 on the topic of Family Reunification after the Holocaust. Watch videos from the seminar in this seminar playlist.

Shoah Teaching Alternatives for Jewish Educators (STAJE) and the Advanced Institute are professional development programs for teachers in Jewish schools and in public (and parochial) schools, respectively. We acknowledge in appreciation the Jewish Conference of Material Claims Against Germany for supporting this educational program. Stories Survive: A Plaintiff And Witness In The Bruno Dey Trial

Last week a German court convicted Bruno Dey for helping the Nazis murder thousands of people while he served as a concentration camp guard more than 75 years ago, in what might be one of the last verdicts to be handed down to a living participant in the Holocaust. Ben Cohen, the grandson of Judy Meisel, one of the trial’s co-plaintiffs witnesses, wrote an opinion piece for the Minneapolis Star-Tribune that he allowed us to share on our blog.
