The Good Life
New York City might not actually be that large in size, but it’s abundance of culture, couture and cuisine can make it feel like there’s a lot of ground to cover. And sifting through it all can be quite daunting. But don’t worry, we did that all for you and found some of the best things NYC has to offer this month.
Indulge in the Arts
Marking the centennial of the birth of the famous American photographer Irving Penn (1917–2009), The Met will showcase the most comprehensive collection to date of the photographer’s work. In 2015, The Irving Penn Foundation promised to gift The Met more than 150 photographs by Penn, representing every period of his dynamic career; this gift is the core of the exhibition. These photos include iconic fashion studies of Lisa Fonssagrives-Penn, Penn’s wife; still lifes; Quechua children in Cuzco, Peru; portraits of urban laborers; female nudes; tribesmen in New Guinea; and color flower studies. The exhibition will remain open until July 30.
Boozy Barlour
Boozy ice cream with the same alcohol content as a standard beer (5 percent) is coming to Gramercy. Tipsy Scoop, which serves liquor-infused ice cream, will open its first “barlour” shop at 217 East 26th Street, near Third Avenue, on May 7. Customers can select from 15 classic flavors, which include dark chocolate-whiskey-salted-caramel, spiked hazelnut coffee, and strawberry-rhubarb-bourbon, as well as an unknown seasonal flavor that will change monthly. Ice cream is available either by the scoop or a four-flavor sampler. And yes, you need to be 21 or older to purchase.
Bette It on Dolly
Catch Bette Midler’s return to the stage in her first leading role in a Broadway musical in Hello, Dolly! Directed by four-time Tony winner Jerry Zaks, this Dolly production also features Frasier alum David Hyde Pierce. Inspired by Thornton Wilder’s play The Matchmaker, this musical version debuted in 1964 starring Carol Channing, later becoming a film starring Barbra Streisand, and eventually becoming a standard for American musical theater. The current production is breaking Broadway records, from the highest-ever first-day ticket sales to its recent highest-ever weekly gross at the Shubert (close to $2 million).

Enjoying good food with friends and family is the foundation of the restaurants, and owners Maya and Dean Jankelowitz bring the same energy and love of cooking to their first cookbook. Some of the recipes include traditional Matzoh Ball Soup, Peri-Peri Chicken Wings infused with African bird’s eye chili, and Maya’s Grain Bowl with Turmeric Tahini Dressing.
